- “I perceive unfiltered what is normally filtered by the brain. When I sit in an office, it is difficult to have a conversation with the person I am talking to because I perceive everything around me: bright light, conversations of other colleagues, clattering of dishes from the office kitchen, the noise of the air conditioning.”
Neurodivergent people experience a high level of sensitivity to environmental stimuli, among other things, with the consequences of a stronger, more individual experience of stress and a high need for withdrawal. At the same time, they have a very high level of intrinsic motivation for activities that correspond to their individual areas of interest. They can acquire and access a high level of knowledge in a short time, develop creative problem-solving strategies and new perspectives.
However, not all adults with ADHD find their niche in which their disposition is not a problem, but rather get caught in a vicious circle of failure, hopelessness and lack of confidence that they cannot get out of on their own. Many adults, like me, do not know (for a long time) why they are often unfocused and unstructured or why they offend others with their impulsive behavior. The reasons for leaving the workforce and the lack of knowledge about the cause of “being different” increasingly lead to stagnation and resignation in those affected.
People with ADHD have difficulty tolerating boredom and avoid routine and unstimulating activities. Self-organization requires a lot of energy. It is useful to recognize your own talents and abilities and to consider which jobs and industries they can best be used in. In this way, unloved tasks can be reduced.
